Rock Bible is a gem. The year was 1990. The Mentors had no label as they had recently been kicked off of Metal Blade/Death Records due to El Duce urinating on the CEO’s desk. True story! The band needed a cassette to sell on tour with Ministry and Revolting Cocks. The recordings were done on an 8-track Tascam tape recorder at the legendary Honey Davis’s studio in the heart of Hollywood. Broy has retained all of the original analog tapes. The mixes were remastered by Shawn Franklin, Mentors’ recording engineer. Direct metal mastering was used to create the stampers. This is the Mentors’ White Album, if you will. Steve Broy had many songs, including a drum solo by El Duce, that had never been released from these famous sessions. Broy and Stool Sample Records have decided to release Rock Bible as a double LP. The first LP is the original cassette material. The second LP is the bonus material and outtakes, which include banter and talkback between the band and Honey Davis. This is a second pressing! We ordered 500 but the stamper broke at 350. So there they are. We listened to the test pressings and they sound exceptional. «MENTORS “Oblivion Train” b/w “Cornshucker” (picture sleeve) The Mentors are a “shock rock” band, or as the term has been coined, the founders of “rape rock”. With the likes of the late, great Frank Zappa, the Mentors are largely responsible for the “Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics” label we’ve all become so accustomed. The Mentors formed in 1976 in Seattle, and then moved to Los Angeles in 1979. The “Oblivion Train” session was recorded in Steve Broy’s (Dr. Heathen Scumbag) basement in Seattle, WA, in 1977, long before the band was ever signed in Los Angeles. These two chosen tracks have never been heard by the public and were mastered directly from the original analog tapes. The final product (limited to 500) was pressed on green opaque vinyl. This is the beginning of the Mentors. The sound is primitive. The band is tight and cohesive. Drummer/singer El Duce (RIP) shines.»
Those test presses are long gone. We have three (3) test presses from the 2nd press that was done at Rainbow Records which is now closed. The stampers broke at 350 so we stopped the run. So there are 500 green vinyl and 350 black vinyl in existence.
