XTC’s sixth album, Mummer was another turning point for the band as it marked their first release as a studio only band. The comparatively quieter/more considered English Settlement was very much an album of songs written with one ear for the studio and another for how they would work live. Mummer was different. Freed from the constraints of ‘the road’ this was XTC in widescreen – experimenting with songs, arrangements and the expanded sonic palette that studios can provide when there is no afterthought as to how to reproduce the material in a variety of theatres, university halls and other venues few, if any, of which were built with rock groups in mind. And, just as the Mummers’ plays involve people travelling from place to place in a village enacting tales of the cycle of life (albeit in disguise), XTC travelled the best of the UK’s studios recording, mixing and re-mixing their songs cycle to exacting standards. Released as the follow-up to their most successful UK album to date and with a new record label in America, band and record company hopes were high – three of the album’s first four songs were issued as singles – but were to remain unfulfilled. Fans loved it, the press was positive but radio was changing, especially in the UK, and with no touring it failed, as sometimes happens with bands adopting a new approach, to cross over to that wider audience. As also happens with such records, it’s reputation (and sales) have, over the years, grown far greater than it’s initial reception indicated and it can now be seen, in retrospect, to have been an important first step towards the sort of expansive approach to writing and recording that would yield much greater commercial results later in the same decade with Skylarking and the albums that followed.© DirectToU LLC. It’s not necessarily a sound associated with XTC per se but, with the twin guitar line-up now fully settled, relentless touring schedule and thoughts of recording with Lillywhite and Padgham in the studio where the same engineer/producer combo had established that drum sound, thinking of XTC in rock band terms was the ideal approach for the multitude of songs Partridge and Moulding were individually producing. Preceded by a set of live demos at Phonogram studios, XTC knew exactly what it wanted from a fourth album – even down to the original album title: Work Under Pressure (which helps make more sense of the sleeve photo), prior to setting foot in The Townhouse for the main recordings. The switch to Black Sea was made only to allay the then band manager’s sensitivity to the title being interpreted as a criticism of his management style. More power rock than power pop, when released in Sept. 1980, the album became XTC’s first Top 20 chart album in the UK, narrowly missed the Top 40 (#41) in the USA where it was issued in November, but spent an impressive 24 weeks on the Billboard chart nonetheless. ‘Generals And Majors’ and ‘Towers Of London’ provided twin back to back Top 40 UK singles released either side of the album in a tight eight weeks’ release space in September and October, while ‘Sgt. Rock’ propelled the band back into the UK top 20 in January 1981. Newly mastered by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering from tapes approved by Andy Partridge. The first 1980s versions didn’t include «Dear God» and after it was a hit, «Mermaid Smiled» was dropped on some later versions to include «Dear God». The full album has only been on vinyl in 2LP deluxe editions playing at 45RPM. When it came time to master the album on vinyl in 2010, Andy Partridge – still never entirely happy with the overall sound of the finished album – took it to award-winning mastering engineer John Dent, who noticed something that had never previously been spotted. Somewhere, possibly in the transfer from the multi-channel tape to the stereo master, a polarity had been reversed. This is not the same thing as a reversed left/right channel which puts a stereo picture out of phase and makes the sound unlistenable, but a much more difficult to pin down event that can be triggered by something as simple as a badly wired plug in the overall system which, nonetheless, removes some of the punch and presence from a finished recording. With the polarity corrected, the album – complete with original artwork and «Dear God» – was issued on vinyl as a double LP deluxe edition playing at 45rpm in the original rejected sleeve, then later reissued with the more familiar sleeve… Leaving some fans to wonder why they couldn’t have the 15 song LP on single vinyl playing at 33 & 1/3 RPM. Well, now they can – beautifully mastered for single LP from the corrected polarity masters by Jason at Loud Mastering and pressed on superior 200gram vinyl.© DirectToU LLC. All Rights Reserved.
